The HDMI standard has been improved with new capabilities that are designed to give the user a much better HD experience. Some of the major enhancements introduced in Versions 1.4 and 1.4a are listed below. The new Version 1.4 specifications were introduced in June of 2009 while the 1.4a specifications were introduced in March of 2010. Here is a rundown of some of the major enhancements introduced with this new HDMI specification.
The most notable enhancements introduced in the HDMI 1.4 specification include:
HDMI Ethernet Channel – This enhancement adds the capability for high-speed networking to an HDMI link to take place. This allows the users to get full use of their IP-enabled devices without a separate Ethernet cable. This is important since you now have less clutter to deal with and a much cleaner cord management.
Audio Return Channel – This feature enables you to eliminate the need for a separate audio cable. Basically, if you’ve got an HDMI-connected TV with a built-in tuner, you will now be able to send audio data to a surround audio system without the need for a separate audio cable – the new HDMI cable with the 1.4a specification can handle that task for you.
3D Support – This version now supports both input and output protocols for major 3D video formats giving you a true 3D experience whether it be for 3D home theater applications or for 3D gaming. Basically, if you’ve got a 3D TV, this for format can allow you to get full benefit from your 3D TV.
Go Beyond 1080P with 4K Support – Video resolutions far beyond the 1080p standard are now supported, thus, allowing for next-generation displays sporting ultra-high resolutions.
Content Type Support – This new specification allows your TV to optimize the picture settings in real time between the display and the source devices based on the type of content being displayed.
Increased Color Space Support – Digital photography and computer graphics use additional color models. The new 1.4a specification allows complete support for these additional color models.
HDMI Micro Connector Support for Various Devices – These days, many devices such as phones and other portable devices are using micro HDMI connections. These new, smaller connectors allow you to use an HDMI cable with your portable devices, thus giving you support up to 1080p video resolutions.
Support for Connections Used in Automotive Systems – automotive video systems are using new cables and connectors with unique requirements for the motoring environment. The new 1.4a specification delivers true HD quality while supporting these new automotive environments.
